Well, thank you very much. Just a few days after I read this post here (okay, so it took me a while to see it, so shoot me) my HD has made some weird noises and died. It's currently being treated in critical condition in some computer lab, in the hope that some of the stuff (most of it had backups, thankfully) can be salvaged.
I'm pretty sure it got the idea from reading your post. Shame on you, giving rotten ideas to normally civilized drives.
