Crap.
They went with the ultra conservative grand inquisitor.
My favorite comment about this was made by Patrick Nielsen Hayden, in Making Light's comments, on Ratzinger's choice to take the name Benedict XVI:
Benedict, hell. Look at the guy--he's Palpatine I.

It goes rather well with the scary trend, there. Did you notice they had Cardinal Law (the Boston pedophile) say a prayer for the dead pope? Sort of a statement of values, I thought: "savage young boys, go ahead, the church won't hold it against you".
Scary times, Didi.
Yeah. And while the old pope is being canonized (figuratively right now, but soon, literally), I can't help but remember that he was the one who put Cardinal Rat (or should it be Pope Rat now?) and Cardinal Law where they are.
I should point out that Cardinal Law is not a pedophile, or that at least there's no evidence that he is. He did do a hell of a lot to cover up for pedophile priests.
And indeed, the church is a scary, scary institution right now. And while its regression back to the middle ages should not have much direct impact on me, I suspect it will have a major impact on the world, and certainly goes along with the scary ass trends of evangelicalism and belief in the end times that are rampant in America (and, most scaringly, in American politics) right now.
Right, I should have been more careful - the man who made it SAFE for many, many priests to act on their pedophilia in Boston. Something about forgiveness, I guess, and having their sins washed away in the blood of the lamb. This is NOT what I understood from what Jesus said. (Of course, merely *LISTENING* to him counts as a heresy...)
And (psst!) - it's not just here. Although a lot of the crazies within walking and driving distance of you are US exports.
Yeah. I know. The crazy, it is festering quite impressively here as well.
